Expanding School Design
Building a better school district requires a multifaceted, integrated strategy that considers the District as a whole and leverages every asset available to it. One strategy is to grow the number of quality schools, the range of services provided to students, and the appeal of Oakland Public Schools to existing families and to those who have chosen other educational options.
Part of our restructuring plan includes expanding current school programs by changing some school’s grade configurations to K-8 or 6-12. What Do We Hope to Accomplish through Restructuring?

Why Expand Grade Levels?
- Schools with a proven track record for success with students, particularly African American and Latino students, would have more time to impact academic achievement. This prolonged support could have a significant long-term influence on student success in the future, including high school graduation and college attendance.
- The district loses large numbers of students during the transitions from elementary to middle school and from middle school to high school. By creating schools that are able to serve students for a longer period of time during those crucial transitions, we hope to keep more students in Oakland schools, thus posing a significant financial benefit to the District.
- As the District develops full service community schools, having schools that serve students for a longer period of time will allow students, families, and school staff to develop strong ties that hold students at their center.
